TMC Faces Fresh Turmoil as Over 20 MPs Write to Lok Sabha Speaker, NDA Shift Speculation Grows

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) appears to be heading into one of its most challenging phases in recent years, with more than 20 of its Members of Parliament reportedly writing to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, fueling intense speculation about a possible split within the party and a realignment of political loyalties in New Delhi.

The development has triggered widespread political discussion, particularly amid reports that a sufficient number of MPs are prepared to form a separate parliamentary group or even launch a new political faction. Sources suggest that a distinct TMC bloc in the Lok Sabha could emerge in the near future, although leaders involved are said to be waiting for an appropriate moment before making any final announcement.

Growing Pressure on Mamata Banerjee

The reported rebellion comes at a time when former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is facing increasing pressure from within her party. Signs of internal dissatisfaction became more visible following the resignation of senior TMC leader Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, whose departure has set off a chain of political developments that now threaten to reshape the party's parliamentary strength.

Roy's resignation has not only exposed internal divisions but has also emboldened a section of MPs who appear dissatisfied with the party's current direction.

Delhi Meetings Spark Political Speculation

According to sources, around 13 TMC Lok Sabha MPs recently met Sukhendu Sekhar Roy in New Delhi. The meeting immediately sparked speculation about possible political realignments and growing dissent within the party ranks.

The situation gained further significance when reports emerged that the same group later met Union Minister and senior BJP leader Bhupender Yadav. West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari was also reportedly present during the discussions, although there has been no official confirmation regarding the complete list of participants or the agenda of the meeting.

Political observers view these interactions as a sign that a section of TMC lawmakers may be exploring alternatives outside the party framework.

MPs Signal Support for NDA

Adding to the political drama, TMC MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar publicly claimed that nearly 20 Trinamool Congress MPs, including herself, had decided to support the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

According to her, a group of dissident MPs submitted a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla seeking recognition of their intention to align with the NDA. She stated that the lawmakers had accepted the electoral verdict in West Bengal and believed their future political course should be aligned with the ruling alliance at the Centre.

If the move materialises formally, it could significantly alter the political landscape in West Bengal and strengthen the NDA's position in Parliament.

Names Linked to the Developments

Sources have linked several TMC MPs to the ongoing political developments. These include Prasun Banerjee, Sharmila Sarkar, Arup Chakraborty, Kalipada Soren, Jagadish Chandra Basunia, Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, Partha Bhowmick, Bapi Halder, Satabdi Roy, Asit Kumar Mal, June Malia, Abu Taher Khan and Khalilur Rahman.

However, insiders within the Trinamool Congress believe that not all lawmakers associated with the meetings may ultimately leave the party. Some leaders argue that MPs representing minority-dominated constituencies could find it politically difficult to join a new formation and may eventually return to the TMC fold.

Sukhendu Roy's Sharp Criticism of TMC

In his resignation letter addressed to Mamata Banerjee, Sukhendu Sekhar Roy launched a blistering attack on the party leadership and governance model. He accused the TMC of being plagued by rampant corruption, oppression of women and administrative failures.

Roy also alleged that West Bengal was witnessing severe disorder across key sectors such as education, healthcare, industry, employment and law and order. In a significant political shift, he praised the Bharatiya Janata Party, arguing that voters had delivered a historic mandate and expressing confidence in the new government's development agenda.

Political Implications

The emerging rebellion has the potential to become one of the most significant political developments in West Bengal since the recent Assembly elections. If a sizeable group of MPs formally breaks away from the TMC and aligns with the NDA, it could reshape opposition politics in the state and weaken Mamata Banerjee's influence at the national level.

While the Trinamool Congress leadership has yet to issue a detailed response, the coming days are likely to be crucial in determining whether the dissent remains a temporary challenge or develops into a full-fledged political split with far-reaching consequences.
