Tensions Flare in Falta, WB, as Locals Protest Alleged Intimidation Ahead of Vote Counting

Massive protests broke out in Falta area of West Bengal as residents alleged threats and intimidation by workers of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) ahead of the counting of votes for the Assembly elections scheduled on May 4. The unrest highlights growing tensions in parts of the state as the electoral process enters its final phase.

According to local residents, the protests intensified after repeated allegations that TMC supporters attempted to influence voters through fear and coercion. Demonstrators gathered in large numbers, voicing concerns about their safety and demanding immediate intervention by authorities.

In the Hasimnagar area, residents accused TMC workers of harassment and violence. One voter alleged that individuals entered their village, targeted women, and assaulted locals. The resident further claimed that a local TMC leader issued grave threats, warning of severe consequences if the party returned to power. These allegations, though serious, remain unverified and have not yet been independently confirmed by authorities.

Protests escalated when demonstrators blocked roads, including a stretch near Dum Dum Road, demanding swift action against those accused. Locals said they had set a deadline for police action, and when no arrests were made, they resumed demonstrations. Tensions peaked as protesters clashed with security personnel, with allegations that police resorted to a lathi charge to disperse the crowd. Some protesters claimed that women were also injured during the police action, with a few requiring hospitalization.

The agitating residents have called for a repoll in Falta, alleging that the electoral environment was compromised due to intimidation. They have also demanded the deployment of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) throughout the area to ensure a free and fair counting process.

Several protesters, including women, expressed fear for their safety, alleging that groups of men on motorcycles entered villages and issued threats. They claimed that both men and women were warned of violent repercussions, creating an atmosphere of fear ahead of the crucial counting day.

The developments come amid ongoing repolling in 15 booths across the Magrahat Paschim and Diamond Harbour constituencies. The Election Commission of India had ordered repolling following reports of irregularities during the second phase of polling.

Authorities have yet to issue a detailed statement on the allegations or the police response. As tensions persist, the situation in Falta remains under close watch, with demands growing for stronger security measures to ensure the integrity of the electoral process.
