Tennis Legend Leander Paes Joins BJP Ahead of Bengal Polls, May Add Star Power to Campaign

In a significant political development ahead of the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections, tennis icon Leander Paes joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday, March 31. The move comes just weeks before the state heads to the polls in a high-stakes electoral contest.

Paes formally entered politics in the presence of Union Ministers Kiren Rijiju and Sukanta Majumdar at the party headquarters in the national capital. Sources indicate that the celebrated athlete is likely to contest in the West Bengal Assembly elections, adding a new dimension to the BJP’s campaign strategy.

Can Paes Boost BJP’s Prospects?

The entry of Leander Paes into the BJP is being viewed as a strategic move that could enhance the party’s appeal, particularly in urban constituencies. With a strong fan base and a widely respected public image, Paes may help the BJP connect with upper-middle-class voters, professionals, and sports enthusiasts—especially in cities like Kolkata.

His presence also offers the party an opportunity to broaden its outreach among younger voters, projecting a more aspirational and dynamic image beyond conventional political narratives. Political observers believe that his clean reputation and international stature could lend credibility and freshness to the party’s campaign in the state.
