Suvendu Adhikari was sworn in as the Chief Minister of West Bengal on Saturday at 11 am in a grand ceremony held at the iconic Brigade Parade Ground. The event marked a historic political shift in the state as the Bharatiya Janata Party officially formed its first full-fledged government in West Bengal after registering a sweeping victory in the recently concluded Assembly elections.
The BJP secured an impressive 207 seats in the state Assembly, ending decades of dominance by regional political parties and opening a new chapter in Bengal’s political history. Thousands of party workers, supporters, and political leaders gathered at the venue to witness the ceremony, which quickly turned into one of the most significant political events in recent years.
Following the announcement of the election results, Suvendu Adhikari met Governor RN Ravi to formally stake claim to form the government. Calling the mandate “historic,” Adhikari said the people of Bengal had voted for change, development, and stable governance. He assured citizens that his administration would work towards fulfilling every major promise made during the election campaign.
In his first remarks after taking oath, Adhikari stressed that his government would prioritise infrastructure growth, employment generation, law and order, and welfare initiatives aimed at improving the lives of ordinary citizens. He also stated that the new government would focus on transparent administration and faster implementation of development projects across the state.
The swearing-in ceremony witnessed the presence of several prominent leaders from across the country, underlining the political importance of the occasion. Among the chief ministers who attended were Prem Singh Tamang, Khem Chand Singh, Neiphiu Rio, Pema Khandu, Manik Saha, and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.
Other prominent attendees included Rajasthan Deputy Chief Minister Diya Kumari, Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, BJP president and Union Minister J. P. Nadda, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, senior BJP leader Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Union Minister Suresh Gopi, and Member of Parliament Harshabardhan Singla.
Suvendu Adhikari’s rise in Bengal politics has been one of the most closely watched political developments in recent years. Once a trusted aide of Mamata Banerjee and a senior leader in the All India Trinamool Congress, Adhikari joined the BJP ahead of the 2021 Assembly elections. His political stature grew significantly after he defeated Mamata Banerjee in the high-profile Nandigram constituency battle, a contest that drew national attention.
Since then, Adhikari has emerged as one of the BJP’s strongest faces in Bengal politics. His elevation as Chief Minister is being viewed as a major breakthrough for the BJP in eastern India and a sign of the party’s growing influence in the state. Political analysts believe the new government’s performance over the coming years will play a crucial role in shaping the future political landscape of West Bengal.
