Surgeon Vice Admiral Manish Honwad, VSM, assumed charge as the Director and Commandant of the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune, on Tuesday morning, marking a new chapter in his distinguished career spanning more than 37 years in the Armed Forces Medical Services.
An alumnus of AFMC, Surgeon Vice Admiral Honwad completed his MBBS from the institution in 1989. He subsequently pursued his MD in Anaesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine from AFMC in 1998. He is also a WHO Fellow in Neuro-Anaesthesiology from the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), Bengaluru.
The Flag Officer has further strengthened his expertise in public administration, having completed an M.Phil in Public Administration from the Indian Institute of Public Administration, New Delhi.
During his career, Surgeon Vice Admiral Honwad has held several prestigious academic, clinical and administrative positions. His key assignments include Additional Director General Medical Services (Navy) at Naval Headquarters, as well as Commanding Officer of Indian Naval Hospitals Ship (INHS) Sanjivani and INHS Asvini. He has now taken over the leadership of AFMC, one of India's premier institutions for military medical education and training.
Apart from his extensive clinical and administrative experience, Surgeon Vice Admiral Honwad has made significant contributions to healthcare education, particularly in the field of healthcare simulation. He is a Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator from the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSIH), USA.
He has also served as an international speaker on healthcare simulation and has shared his expertise at various national and international conferences. His experience in medical education, patient care, healthcare administration and simulation-based training is expected to further strengthen AFMC's academic and professional environment.
In recognition of his dedicated service and commitment to patient care, Surgeon Vice Admiral Honwad was awarded the Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM) in 2025. His distinguished career also includes several commendations. He has received the Chief of Naval Staff Commendation on two occasions, in 2006 and 2013, besides the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief (South) Commendation in 2007 and the FOC-in-C (West) Commendation in 2011.
His appointment as Director and Commandant comes with the responsibility of steering AFMC's academic, clinical and institutional priorities while maintaining its high standards of medical education and training for the Armed Forces.
