STF Busts Illegal Cough Syrup Manufacturing Unit in Bhopal, Seizes Stock Worth ₹1.5 Crore

In a major operation against illegal drug manufacturing, the Madhya Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) has uncovered an alleged illegal cough syrup production unit operating from a residential property in the Gandhi Nagar area of Bhopal. The raid resulted in the seizure of more than 50,000 bottles of suspected intoxicating cough syrup, along with manufacturing machinery, packaging materials, and other equipment valued at approximately ₹1.5 crore.

The operation was conducted at a house located in Dobra Patel City Colony after STF officials received specific intelligence inputs regarding the illegal production and distribution of narcotic cough syrup in the region. Acting on the information, a joint team of STF personnel and officials from the Drug Department launched a surprise raid late at night.

According to STF Deputy Inspector General Rahul Lodha, the operation began around midnight and continued for nearly three hours, concluding at approximately 3 a.m. During the search, authorities discovered a large quantity of cough syrup bottles, cartons, labels, and machinery allegedly being used to manufacture and package an unlicensed cough syrup brand identified as "Off Cuff."

Investigators suspect that the unit had been operating illegally for some time and was involved in the large-scale production and supply of intoxicating cough syrup. Officials believe the seized stock was intended for distribution across various locations, although the exact reach of the network is still being investigated.

The STF arrested seven individuals in connection with the case, including three juveniles. All those detained are currently being questioned, and officials have indicated that additional arrests may follow as the investigation progresses. Authorities are examining the roles played by each accused in the manufacturing and distribution process.

To determine the exact composition of the seized syrup and whether it contains banned or controlled substances, samples have been sent to a laboratory for detailed analysis. The results are expected to provide crucial evidence regarding the nature and extent of the illegal operation.

Sources revealed that the STF had been receiving intelligence reports for several weeks about the clandestine production and sale of intoxicating cough syrup from the Gandhi Nagar area. Based on these inputs, a carefully planned operation was executed under the supervision of senior STF officers. Notably, the local police station was reportedly not informed in advance to maintain operational secrecy.

Investigators are now focusing on identifying the source of raw materials used in the manufacturing process and tracing the distribution channels through which the cough syrup was allegedly supplied. Authorities are also examining whether the illegal product had been distributed to other districts of Madhya Pradesh or even neighboring states.

The property where the manufacturing unit was allegedly operating is said to belong to a person named Malviya. However, officials stated that they have not yet been able to establish contact with the owner and are investigating whether he had any knowledge of or involvement in the activities taking place on the premises.

An STF official said a formal case has been registered and further legal proceedings are underway. "The investigation is continuing, and strict action will be taken against everyone found involved in the illegal trade," the official stated.

The bust is being viewed as one of the most significant actions against illegal pharmaceutical manufacturing in the state in recent months and highlights the growing concern over the misuse of cough syrups containing potentially addictive substances. Authorities have assured that the network behind the operation will be thoroughly dismantled and those responsible brought to justice.
