SP MLA Kamal Akhtar Resigns as Chief Whip in UP Assembly, Vows Loyalty to Akhilesh Yadav

In a significant political development in Uttar Pradesh, Kamal Akhtar has resigned from the post of chief whip of the Samajwadi Party in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly, triggering fresh speculation about changes in the party's legislative leadership.

Akhtar, who represents the Kanth Assembly constituency, stepped down amid reports of differences with SP MP Ruchi Veera. The party leadership had recently held a meeting in Lucknow to address the issue, and his resignation is being viewed as part of an ongoing internal realignment within the party.

Despite stepping down from the key organisational post, Akhtar reaffirmed his loyalty to SP chief Akhilesh Yadav, making it clear that his commitment to the party remains unchanged.

In a post on X, Akhtar said, "We have always followed the order received from the Honorable National President Shri Akhilesh Yadav Ji, and I shall forever continue to follow whatever orders are received in the future."

His resignation comes at a time when political parties across the country are witnessing organisational reshuffles and leadership changes. Within the Samajwadi Party, the post of chief whip has acquired particular significance following the departure of former incumbent Manoj Pandey. Pandey had cross-voted during a key legislative contest before leaving the SP to join the Bharatiya Janata Party. He currently serves as a minister in the BJP-led Uttar Pradesh government.

Who is Kamal Akhtar?

Kamal Akhtar is a senior Samajwadi Party leader with decades of experience in Uttar Pradesh politics. He completed his education in economics and law at Jamia Millia Islamia before entering public life.

He served as a Member of the Rajya Sabha from 2004 to 2010, representing Uttar Pradesh. During his parliamentary tenure, he participated in debates on a range of state and national issues.

Akhtar entered the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly after winning the Hasanpur seat in the 2012 Assembly elections. In the Samajwadi Party government, he served as Panchayati Raj Minister and later as Cabinet Minister for Food and Civil Supplies.

Although he lost the 2017 Assembly election, Akhtar made a successful political comeback in 2022 by winning the Kanth Assembly constituency in Moradabad district.

His family has also been active in politics. His wife, Humera Akhtar, contested the Lok Sabha election from Amroha as the Samajwadi Party candidate but was defeated by BJP leader Kanwar Singh Tanwar.

Akhtar's resignation from the chief whip's post is expected to prompt the Samajwadi Party to appoint a new legislative strategist, with political observers closely watching whether the move signals a broader organisational reshuffle ahead of future electoral battles in Uttar Pradesh.
