A Special Operations Group (SOG) personnel was killed and another sustained injuries after terrorists opened fire on security forces along the Anantnag-Kokernag Road in Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday. The attack prompted an immediate and extensive security response, with additional reinforcements deployed to the area and a large-scale cordon and search operation launched to trace the attackers.
According to preliminary reports, the two SOG personnel were on duty along the road when terrorists opened fire on them. Both personnel suffered injuries in the attack and were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. One of the injured officers was reported to be in critical condition.
Officials later confirmed that the critically injured policeman succumbed to his injuries. Hospital authorities stated that he was brought dead to the medical facility. The deceased has been identified as Ashiq Hussain, an SOG personnel who was serving on active duty at the time of the attack. Authorities have not yet issued an official update on the condition of the second injured security personnel.
Following the incident, security forces swiftly secured the entire stretch of the Anantnag-Kokernag Road to prevent the assailants from escaping. A massive search operation involving multiple security agencies was launched, with intensive searches being carried out in the surrounding areas. Security personnel have tightened surveillance and intensified combing operations to track down the terrorists responsible for the attack.
Police have also initiated an investigation to establish the exact sequence of events and identify those involved in the ambush. Officials said all aspects of the incident are being examined, while further details are awaited as the investigation progresses.

In a separate incident on the same day, an Army soldier lost his life after accidentally falling from a height near the Line of Control (LoC) in the Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir. Officials said Rifleman Sukhpreet Singh (27) was on official duty at the forward Mahadev post in the Sunderbani sector when he lost his balance and fell, suffering fatal injuries.
The soldier's body was shifted to a hospital for postmortem, and police have initiated inquest proceedings. Officials said the mortal remains will be sent to his hometown in Punjab, where his last rites will be performed with due honours.
The two incidents highlight the risks faced by security personnel serving in challenging operational environments, whether combating terrorism or guarding India's sensitive border regions. Security agencies continue to remain vigilant as operations against terrorist elements in Jammu and Kashmir proceed.
