Shaktikanta Das Appointed as Principal Secretary-2 to PM Narendra Modi

In a significant administrative reshuffle, Shaktikanta Das, the former Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), has been appointed as the 'Principal Secretary-2' to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The announcement, made through a central government circular, marks a new chapter in the career of the seasoned bureaucrat, who has previously held several key positions in the Indian government.

A Stellar Career in Public Service

Shaktikanta Das, a retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Tamil Nadu cadre, has had a distinguished career spanning over four decades. He served as the 25th Governor of the RBI from December 2018 to December 2024, during which he navigated the Indian economy through some of its most challenging periods, including the COVID-19 pandemic. His tenure at the RBI was marked by decisive monetary policy actions, efforts to stabilize the financial system, and initiatives to boost economic growth.

Prior to his role at the RBI, Das held several pivotal positions in the Government of India, including Secretary of the Department of Economic Affairs (DEA) under the Ministry of Finance. During his time at the DEA, he played a crucial role in shaping India's economic policies, including the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and the government's response to the global financial crisis of 2008.

The New Role: Principal Secretary-2 to the PM

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved Das's appointment as Principal Secretary-2 to the Prime Minister, effective from the date he assumes office. According to the government circular, his tenure will be "co-terminus" with the term of the Prime Minister or until further orders are issued.
