A fresh political storm has erupted within the All India Trinamool Congress after veteran party leader and Lok Sabha MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay on Saturday joined the dissident faction of the party and reached the residence of Union Minister Bhupender Yadav in New Delhi along with rebel MP Satabdi Roy.
The development comes amid escalating tensions within the Trinamool Congress, with the rebel camp preparing to meet Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Monday to seek recognition as a separate parliamentary bloc. The dissidents claim to have the support of 19 Lok Sabha MPs and are expected to request permission to sit alongside members of the ruling BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Parliament.
Rebel MP Jagadish Chandra Barma Basunia said the group had already submitted a representation to the Speaker and would formally stake its claim during Monday's meeting.
“We have submitted the letter. On Monday, we will go to the Speaker and stake our claim to form the real TMC parliamentary group. We will ask the Speaker to give recognition to our claim,” Basunia told PTI Videos.
According to him, the signature campaign in support of the move began on June 8, with 19 MPs signing the representation. Sources indicated that the final timing of the meeting with the Speaker has not yet been decided.
Sources within the rebel faction said nearly 20 MPs are expected to arrive in Delhi before Monday's meeting to discuss their future political strategy. The dissidents reportedly informed the Speaker about the formation of a separate parliamentary bloc under the leadership of Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar and conveyed their intention to support the BJP-led NDA while maintaining a distinct political identity.
A purported list circulating on social media allegedly contains the names and signatures of 19 TMC Lok Sabha MPs backing the move. However, the letter reportedly sent to the Speaker has not been made public, and the document could not be independently verified.
Among those whose names reportedly appear on the list are Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, Satabdi Roy, Bapi Haldar, Sharmila Sarkar, Prasun Bandyopadhyay, Jagadish Barma Basunia, Asit Kumar Mal, Arup Chakraborty, Rachna Banerjee, Saayoni Ghosh, Khalilur Rahaman, Abu Taher Khan, Yusuf Pathan, Mitali Bag, Mala Roy, Kalipada Soren, Deepak Adhikari, June Malia and Partha Bhowmick.
