Senior IPS officer Anurag Kumar on Friday assumed charge as the new Commissioner of Delhi Police, marking a significant leadership change in the national capital's police force. A 1994-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, Kumar was serving as the Special Director in the Intelligence Bureau (IB) before being appointed to head the Delhi Police.
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) announced that the competent authority had approved Kumar's appointment. According to the official notification, he will serve as the Delhi Police Commissioner from the date he assumes office and will continue in the position until further orders.
Kumar succeeds Satish Golcha, who was relieved of the post before the completion of his tenure. Golcha, a 1992-batch AGMUT cadre IPS officer, had been expected to continue as Delhi Police Commissioner until 2027. However, the MHA directed that he report to the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi for his next assignment after formally handing over charge to his successor.
The change at the top is being viewed as an important administrative move, especially given Kumar's extensive experience in policing and intelligence. Over a distinguished career spanning more than three decades, he has handled several critical assignments related to law enforcement, internal security and strategic intelligence.
Before moving to the Intelligence Bureau, Kumar served as Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) in multiple districts of Delhi, where he dealt with law and order management, crime control and public safety in the capital. His tenure in district policing earned him a reputation as an efficient field officer with a deep understanding of the city's policing challenges.
A Bachelor of Engineering graduate, Kumar later joined the Intelligence Bureau, where he held a series of key positions involving intelligence gathering, counter-intelligence and national security operations. His experience in the country's premier intelligence agency is expected to strengthen coordination between intelligence and policing, particularly in a city that serves as the nation's political and administrative hub.
His distinguished service has earned him several prestigious honours. Kumar was awarded the Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2010 and the President's Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2016, recognising his contributions to policing and national security.
Officials believe his appointment comes at a time when Delhi Police continues to face complex security challenges, ranging from law and order management to cybercrime, terrorism-related threats, organised crime and ensuring security during major national and international events hosted in the capital.
The appointment also follows a major restructuring of the Delhi Police leadership carried out earlier this year. On March 3, the force witnessed one of its largest administrative reshuffles in recent years, with the transfer of 70 officers, including 50 IPS officers and 20 DANIPS officers, after approval from the Lieutenant Governor.
The reshuffle involved appointments across several senior positions, including Special Commissioners, Joint Commissioners, Additional Commissioners and Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs). Key divisions such as district policing, crime, traffic, security and specialised units were significantly reorganised as part of the exercise.
With Anurag Kumar now at the helm, expectations are high that his blend of field policing experience and intelligence expertise will help strengthen the Delhi Police's operational capabilities, enhance coordination among security agencies and reinforce public safety in the national capital.
