A long-simmering dispute over sand mining operations in Chhattisgarh's Koriya district erupted into a gruesome act of violence, leaving three people dead, including BJP leader and former Janpad Panchayat President Bharat Singh, popularly known as Lalla Singh. The shocking incident has sent shockwaves across the region and raised serious questions about illegal mining, local rivalries, and law and order.
The tragedy unfolded late Tuesday night in Naugain village under the Sonhat police station limits. According to allegations made by the victims' family, Bharat Singh had gone to attend a meeting aimed at resolving an ongoing dispute linked to sand quarry operations in the area. Instead of negotiations, they claim, he was lured into a carefully planned trap.
Family members allege that the SUV carrying Bharat Singh and his associates was intercepted and trapped between trucks. The attackers allegedly poured petrol on the vehicle before setting it ablaze. By the time the flames were extinguished, three occupants had lost their lives in the inferno.
Police have launched an extensive investigation into the case and have so far arrested four accused — Akshat Tripathi, Vishal Tripathi, Satyaprakash Tripathi, and Mannu Tripathi. Authorities have registered a case against nine named individuals under multiple serious charges, including murder and attempted murder. Search operations are continuing to apprehend the remaining suspects.
The violence is believed to be rooted in a bitter rivalry over sand mining and transportation contracts in the region. Initial reports suggest that the sand quarry contract had been awarded to Bharat Singh's family. However, disputes allegedly emerged over the transportation of sand and the collection of payments linked to mining operations across Sonhat, Kailashpur, Telimuda, Beliya, and Chhingura villages.
Local residents claim that tensions had been escalating for months between Bharat Singh's group and the family of BJP leader Manoj Tripathi. The Tripathi family reportedly owned tipper trucks engaged in transporting sand to Baikunthpur. Differences over business interests, control of transportation routes, and alleged illegal collections are said to have intensified the conflict.
What began as a commercial dispute gradually transformed into a fierce struggle for influence and dominance in the region. Residents say the rivalry had created an atmosphere of intimidation and confrontation long before the fatal incident occurred.
Following the killings, security has been significantly tightened in Koriya district. A heavy police presence has been deployed to prevent any further escalation and maintain peace in the area. Senior officials are monitoring the situation closely, while forensic teams and investigators continue to gather evidence from the crime scene.
The deaths of Bharat Singh and the two others have sparked outrage among local residents and political workers. The incident has once again drawn attention to the challenges posed by illegal mining networks and the violent conflicts that often accompany disputes over natural resources.
As investigations progress, authorities are expected to examine the broader mining operations in the area and determine whether deeper criminal and financial interests were behind the deadly attack. For now, Koriya remains gripped by grief and tension as the district awaits justice for one of the most brutal crimes witnessed in recent years.
