Sadanand Date Appointed Maharashtra DGP: A Seasoned Investigator and 26/11 Hero Takes the Helm

In a significant administrative move, the Maharashtra government has appointed 1990-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Sadanand Date as the new Director General of Police (DGP) of the state. The formal order, approved by the Governor and published on the state government’s official website, confirms that Date will succeed the current DGP, Rashmi Shukla, whose tenure concludes on January 3, 2026.

The appointment, made based on the recommendations of the Union Public Service Commission’s Empanelment Committee, follows established procedure. Date, who recently received central approval to return to his parent Maharashtra cadre, is expected to assume charge in early January 2026. In adherence to Supreme Court guidelines mandating a minimum two-year tenure for a DGP, Date is set to lead the state police force until the end of 2027.

A Stellar Career Defined by Valour and Expertise

Sadanand Date is no stranger to critical roles or to the people of Maharashtra. An officer of the Maharashtra cadre, his career is a testament to versatility, bravery, and intellectual rigour.

He has commanded some of the most sensitive and challenging posts in both state and central agencies, including:

  • Chief of Maharashtra’s Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS)

  • Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) and Joint Commissioner (Law and Order) in Mumbai

  • Deputy Inspector General (DIG) in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI)

  • Inspector General (Operations) in the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF)

  • Commissioner of Police for the Mira-Bhayandar and Vasai-Virar (MBVV) region

  • Most recently, serving as the Director General of the National Investigation Agency (NIA)

The 26/11 Hero and Scholar

Beyond his impressive resume, Date is widely and respectfully remembered for his extraordinary courage during the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks in 2008. Then serving as Additional Commissioner of Police, Central Region, he led a police team in a direct confrontation with terrorists near Cama Hospital. During the fierce gunfight, Date sustained injuries but refused to back down, embodying the highest ideals of police duty. For this act of exceptional bravery, he was awarded the President’s Police Medal for Gallantry.

His profile is further distinguished by his academic accomplishments. Holding a Master’s in Commerce, Date also earned a doctorate in economic offences from Pune University, underscoring a deep intellectual engagement with the complexities of modern crime.

His personal journey adds a layer of inspiration. In his early years, he supported his family by selling newspapers in Pune, a humble beginning that paved the way for a remarkable journey in public service.

The Road Ahead

Date’s appointment comes at a crucial time. The Maharashtra police force faces evolving challenges, from cybercrime and financial fraud to maintaining law and order in a dynamic political and social landscape. His vast experience—spanning grassroots policing, federal investigation with the CBI and NIA, and counter-terrorism operations—uniquely equips him to steer the force.

His proven track record as an investigator, his operational experience in central armed police forces, and his intimate knowledge of the state’s security apparatus position him as a leader capable of guiding the Maharashtra Police with a steady hand. As he prepares to take charge, the force and the citizens await the tenure of an officer whose life and career have been defined by resilience, scholarship, and an unwavering commitment to duty.
