In a significant development in the ongoing West Bengal Assembly Election 2026, the Election Commission of India has ordered repolling in 15 polling booths across two constituencies—Magrahat West and Diamond Harbour. The move comes after procedural and administrative irregularities were reported during the initial phase of voting, prompting the poll body to intervene to uphold the integrity of the electoral process.
According to official directives, fresh voting will take place on May 2 between 7:00 am and 6:00 pm. Election officials have been instructed to strictly adhere to all prescribed procedures to ensure a smooth and transparent polling process. The Commission has emphasized zero tolerance for lapses this time around.
The 142-Magrahat West Assembly constituency will witness repolling in 11 polling stations. These include booths located at Yarpur F.P. School, Najra F.P. School (Rooms 1 and 2), Deula F.P. School, Ghola Nayapara Girls High Madrasa, Ektaara Malaya F.P. School (Rooms 1 and 2), Ektaara Malaya Dhoda F.P. School, and Bahirpur Kurkuria F.P. School (Rooms 1, 2, and 3).
These polling centres were flagged due to concerns related to electoral procedures and administrative handling during the initial voting, necessitating fresh polling to ensure fairness.
In the 143-Diamond Harbour Assembly constituency, repolling will be conducted in four polling stations: Bagda Junior High School, Chanda F.P. School (Room No. 2), Handeypur F.P. School, and Raynagar F.P. School (Room No. 2).
Authorities have confirmed that all necessary arrangements are being made to ensure that the repolling exercise is conducted without any disruptions.
The Election Commission has issued clear and stringent instructions to local authorities. It has directed that voters in the affected areas be widely informed about the repoll through traditional methods such as drum-beating, along with other means of communication. Additionally, all contesting candidates must be formally notified in writing about the repoll schedule.
Officials have also been instructed to keep the Returning Officers and Election Observers fully informed and involved in the process. The Commission has reiterated that all actions must be taken promptly while maintaining continuous communication with the central authority.
Repolling is a crucial mechanism used by the Election Commission to address irregularities and maintain public confidence in the democratic process. By ordering fresh voting in the affected booths, the Commission aims to ensure that every vote is cast freely and counted fairly.
As voters prepare to return to the polling stations on May 2, all eyes will be on the administration to deliver a transparent and credible electoral exercise—one that reflects the true will of the people.
