Rajnath Singh Initiates Lok Sabha Debate on Pahalgam Attack and 'Operation Sindoor'

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday initiated a high-stakes debate in the Lok Sabha on the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack and India’s subsequent military response, codenamed ‘Operation Sindoor’. The special session, expected to last 16 hours, is aimed at highlighting the government’s resolute approach to national security in the wake of the deadly assault that left 26 civilians dead.

In his opening remarks, Rajnath Singh described the Pahalgam attack as a "cowardly act of terrorism" designed to destabilize peace in the Kashmir Valley. He said the government's swift and decisive action through Operation Sindoor had sent a "clear and powerful message" to those attempting to threaten India's sovereignty.

“India will not tolerate any attempt to harm its people. Operation Sindoor was meticulously planned and executed with precision to neutralize terrorist infrastructure and safeguard our borders,” Singh said.

'Operation Sindoor' — A Strategic Response

Launched days after the Pahalgam attack, Operation Sindoor was a coordinated military campaign involving the Indian Army, Air Force, and intelligence agencies. Sources suggest that the operation targeted terror launchpads and logistic hubs along the Line of Control and deep within hostile territory, though the government has not publicly disclosed specific operational details due to national security concerns.

The name “Sindoor” — symbolizing sanctity and protection — was chosen to represent the defence of innocent lives, particularly women and children, who were among the victims of the April attack.

Home Minister and EAM to Speak

Home Minister Amit Shah and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar are also scheduled to speak later in the day. Shah is expected to provide internal security assessments and outline intelligence cooperation, while Jaishankar will likely address the international ramifications and diplomatic engagements post-operation.

Political analysts see this session as a crucial platform for the ruling government to showcase its “zero-tolerance policy” on terrorism ahead of upcoming state elections.

PM Modi May Address House

Amid growing speculation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi may also intervene in the debate to reinforce his government's record on national security. Sources indicate that Modi's possible address would highlight India's strategic shift from a "defensive" to a "decisive" posture in counter-terror operations.

“Our enemies must know — this is a new India. We will not forget, we will not forgive, and we will act,” Modi is expected to emphasize if he speaks.

A United Stand or Political Flashpoint?

While the opposition has largely supported the government’s action in the immediate aftermath of the Pahalgam tragedy, some parties are expected to raise questions about intelligence failures and the need for better civilian protection in sensitive areas.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Trinamool’s Sudip Bandyopadhyay, and DMK’s TR Baalu are among those expected to participate in the discussion.

The special session on Operation Sindoor is being closely watched not only for its political implications but also for its potential to signal India's evolving counter-terror doctrine to the world.
