Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has unveiled ambitious plans for a high-speed tunnel project aimed at alleviating traffic congestion between New Delhi and Gurugram in Haryana. The proposal, currently in its feasibility study phase, marks a significant step towards enhancing connectivity and reducing travel times within the National Capital Region (NCR).
The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways has initiated a detailed feasibility study for the construction of a high-speed tunnel linking Talkatora Stadium in New Delhi to Gurugram. Minister Gadkari confirmed the appointment of a consultant to oversee the comprehensive research required for the project's assessment.
"The project is currently in the research phase," Gadkari stated in an interview with Mint, highlighting the intent behind the initiative. The tunnel aims not only to slash travel times but also to mitigate the traffic burden on Delhi's congested roads, contributing to efforts in curbing air pollution.
If realized, the tunnel promises to revolutionize commuting patterns between Talkatora Stadium and Gurugram, potentially reducing travel durations from the current one hour to an impressive 10–15 minutes. This transformation could redefine daily commuting experiences for thousands of residents and professionals navigating this critical NCR corridor.
The scope of the project reflects a substantial investment commitment by the Transport Ministry, with an allocation of up to Rs 1 lakh crore earmarked for infrastructure projects specifically targeting Delhi. This funding underscores the government's determination to address longstanding traffic challenges and bolster urban mobility infrastructure.
Minister Gadkari further underscored the urgency of these developments, citing data from Vahan, the national vehicle registry, which underscores the mounting vehicular pressure on Delhi's streets. The registration statistics for 2024–25 reveal a significant influx of vehicles, including over 4.5 lakh two-wheelers, 1.9 lakh cars, 2,300 buses, and approximately 17,200 trucks, necessitating innovative traffic management solutions.
In addition to the Talkatora-Gurugram tunnel, Minister Gadkari has directed the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to explore feasibility studies for two additional infrastructure links within Delhi. These include either a tunnel or an elevated stretch connecting Sarai Kale Khan to the planned INA-Nelson Mandela Marg corridor, and a separate tunnel linking Gyarah Murti or Talkatora Stadium to the same corridor.
The integration of these proposals into the tender process for the elevated corridor project reflects a cohesive strategy aimed at optimizing urban transport networks and enhancing commuter convenience across Delhi.
