In a display of rare political unanimity, senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Prem Kumar was elected unopposed as the 18th Speaker of the Bihar Legislative Assembly on Tuesday. His election was a foregone conclusion after he emerged as the sole candidate for the prestigious post, having filed his nomination on Monday. Notably, his candidature received cross-party support, including from Opposition MLAs, signaling a moment of consensus in the state’s often turbulent political landscape.
The election was swiftly followed by warm congratulations from across the House. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, addressing the Assembly, extended his felicitations and expressed confidence in the new Speaker’s abilities. "I congratulate Prem Kumar ji on behalf of the entire House," the Chief Minister said. "He has long experience and will fully cooperate in the functioning of the House.
