In a significant political development in the national capital, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Pravesh Wahi was on Wednesday elected as the Mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). The announcement was made by presiding officer Raja Iqbal Singh on April 29, marking a decisive victory for the BJP in the civic body.
Wahi’s election comes as the BJP secured a clear majority in the electoral college, aided by the absence of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which opted out of the mayoral contest. With around 156 votes in its favour—well above the required 137 out of a 273-member electoral college—the BJP ensured a comfortable win, while the Indian National Congress managed only nine votes.
Following his victory, Wahi expressed gratitude to party leadership and supporters. Addressing a press conference, he said he was thankful to the central and Delhi leadership for entrusting “an ordinary worker” like him with such responsibility. He pledged to discharge his duties with honesty and dedication, aligning with the party’s principles and policies.
Currently serving as the Leader of the House in the MCD and a councillor from Rohini E Ward, Wahi brings decades of organisational experience to the role. His political journey is deeply rooted in grassroots activism and ideological work.
Born into a family that migrated from Rawalpindi in present-day Pakistan, Wahi belongs to the Khatri Punjabi community. He received his early education at an MCD primary school in Old Delhi and became associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) during his teenage years.
Wahi began his public life in 1990 as an area representative of the Vishva Hindu Parishad and later rose to become a district president in 1998. His formal entry into the BJP came in 2002 through the youth wing, where he held several organisational roles before transitioning into electoral politics.
He was first elected as a councillor from Rohini in 2007 and later represented Naharpur, serving a second term between 2012 and 2017. During this period, he held key administrative roles, including chairman of the Rohini zonal committee (2010–2012) and chairman of the standing committee in the erstwhile North Corporation (2016–2017).
With his elevation to the mayoral post, expectations are high that Wahi will focus on strengthening civic administration and addressing urban challenges in Delhi.
