In a significant move to shed colonial ties and honor India's rich cultural and historical heritage, the central government has announced the renaming of Port Blair in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands to "Sri Vijaya Puram." Union Home Minister Amit Shah shared this news on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, emphasizing the deep historical significance of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, particularly in India's freedom struggle.
The renaming is part of a broader effort by the government to reclaim India's history and move away from its colonial past. Amit Shah highlighted that the new name, "Vijaya Puram," symbolizes the victory of India’s freedom movement and embodies the spirit of triumph that the country has achieved through years of struggle against colonial rule. He also drew attention to the islands' role as a strategic naval base during the Chola Empire, further cementing their historical and strategic importance.
This move follows an earlier initiative by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who renamed three major islands in the Andaman & Nicobar archipelago in 2018 in honor of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, the prominent Indian freedom fighter. Ross Island became Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep, Neil Island was renamed Shaheed Dweep, and Havelock Island was renamed Swaraj Dweep. These islands, now popular tourist destinations, stand as reminders of India’s freedom struggle and the legacy of its brave leaders.
Anil Tiwari, BJP State Secretary and Convener for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, expressed gratitude to the central government, stating, “We are thankful to the Government of India for this step of renaming Port Blair to Sri Vijaya Puram. This historic decision is a testament to the vision and commitment to honoring our nation’s rich heritage. The renaming of Port Blair is a fitting tribute to the sacrifices of our freedom fighters and a significant step towards preserving our cultural identity.”
The Andaman & Nicobar Islands hold a special place in India's historical and strategic framework. Once used as a British penal colony where countless freedom fighters were imprisoned, the islands have evolved into an important center for tourism and development. Port Blair, the capital, is a hub of activity and plays a critical role in the nation’s naval and developmental goals.
This renaming marks a continuing trend by the government to emphasize India's indigenous history, moving beyond colonial narratives and restoring the pride and valor of the country’s past. It also reflects the current administration's focus on honoring the sacrifices of freedom fighters and reinforcing India’s cultural identity on the global stage.
As India moves forward, the renaming of Port Blair to "Sri Vijaya Puram" is yet another step in reasserting the country’s rich legacy, ensuring that future generations remember the historical and cultural significance of these islands.
