Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said that 21st-century India is confidently moving towards the goal of becoming a developed nation, asserting that the country is driven by the ambition to achieve greater progress and global leadership. Addressing a vibrant community event in Melbourne during his visit to Australia, the Prime Minister highlighted India's transformation, the growing role of its global diaspora, and the deepening strategic partnership between India and Australia.
Speaking to members of the Indian community, Mr. Modi said that today's India is a nation that believes in "growing more and achieving more," reflecting the aspirations of over a billion people. He recalled interacting with members of the Indian diaspora in Sydney earlier during his visit and said he had eagerly looked forward to meeting the Indian community in Melbourne as well.
Reflecting on the evolution of bilateral ties, Mr. Modi noted that his first visit to Australia in 2014 came after a gap of 28 years since the last visit by an Indian Prime Minister. He pointed out that his current trip marks his third visit to Australia in the last 12 years, describing it as a "hat-trick" that symbolizes the unprecedented momentum in India-Australia relations.
The Prime Minister said the relationship between the two democracies has expanded across strategic, economic, cultural and people-to-people dimensions. He stressed that the frequency of high-level engagements reflects the trust and shared vision between New Delhi and Canberra.
Highlighting the cultural bonds shared by the two nations, Mr. Modi drew a parallel between Ahmedabad, home to the world's largest cricket stadium, and Melbourne, renowned for its iconic cricket ground. He said cricket serves as a powerful bridge connecting the people of India and Australia, strengthening mutual understanding and friendship beyond diplomacy.
Mr. Modi also praised Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, saying he has won the hearts of the Indian community through his warmth, goodwill and commitment to strengthening bilateral ties.
Beginning his address, the Prime Minister acknowledged the Traditional Owners of the land and paid respects to their Elders—past, present and emerging. Referring to the overwhelming turnout at the venue, he described the event as "houseful" and a "blockbuster," underscoring the enthusiasm of the Indian diaspora in Australia.
Addressing the gathering, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese lauded the vibrant participation at the event, saying the energy and enthusiasm on display reflected the strength of the Australia-India partnership. He noted that the dynamism of the people of both countries continues to inject optimism and momentum into bilateral relations.
The community event served as a celebration of the enduring ties between India and Australia, with both leaders emphasizing shared democratic values, expanding economic cooperation, and strong people-to-people connections. As India advances toward its vision of becoming a developed nation, both countries reaffirmed their commitment to further deepening their comprehensive strategic partnership in the years ahead.
