Prime Minister Narendra Modi has concluded a landmark state visit to Australia, marking a significant milestone in the rapidly expanding India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. The high-profile visit strengthened cooperation across trade, defence, clean energy, sports, and people-to-people ties, while laying the foundation for deeper collaboration between the two Indo-Pacific democracies.
The visit began with a strong economic focus as Prime Minister Modi participated in the India-Australia CEOs Forum alongside Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. Business leaders highlighted the remarkable 55 percent growth in bilateral trade since the implementation of the India-Australia Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA) in 2022. Both leaders agreed to accelerate negotiations on the proposed Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA), aimed at further boosting trade, investment, and market access between the two nations.
A major achievement of the visit was the finalisation of the administrative arrangement that will facilitate the long-term supply of Australian uranium to India. The agreement operationalises the landmark civil nuclear cooperation framework signed in 2014 and is expected to strengthen India's clean energy ambitions while deepening bilateral cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
Defence and maritime security also featured prominently during the bilateral discussions. India and Australia adopted a Joint Declaration on Defence and Security Cooperation along with a Maritime Security Collaboration Roadmap, reaffirming their commitment to maintaining a free, open, inclusive, and rules-based Indo-Pacific. The new initiatives are expected to enhance defence collaboration, maritime domain awareness, and regional security cooperation.
The visit also witnessed a massive display of public enthusiasm during the "Melbourne Meets Modi" community event at Melbourne's Marvel Stadium. Around 25,000 members of the Indian diaspora attended the event, where Prime Minister Modi described the one-million-strong Indian-Australian community as the "living bridge" connecting the two countries. Prime Minister Albanese praised the Indian community for its immense contribution to Australia's multicultural society and economic growth.
Highlighting the bipartisan nature of India's relationship with Australia, Prime Minister Modi also met Opposition Leader Angus Taylor. The Australian opposition leader described Mr. Modi as "a true friend of our nation" and reiterated support for strengthening bilateral cooperation, including India's role in the International Solar Alliance and peaceful uranium exports.
One of the most symbolic moments of the visit came at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), where Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Albanese launched the India-Australia Sports Collaboration Roadmap. The initiative seeks to expand cooperation in sports science, athlete development, coaching, infrastructure, and sports management as India prepares to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games and Australia gears up for the 2032 Brisbane Olympics.
The sporting partnership also produced a historic cricket announcement, with Cricket Australia confirming that the opening match of the Australian Men's Big Bash League will be played in Chennai this December as part of the week-long G'Day Namaste festival in India. The move is expected to further strengthen sporting and cultural ties between the two cricket-loving nations.
Officials described the visit as a transformative moment in India-Australia relations, moving the partnership beyond traditional diplomacy towards a comprehensive, multi-dimensional alliance encompassing trade, clean energy, defence, technology, education, sports, and strategic cooperation.
With strong bipartisan support in Australia and the growing influence of the Indian diaspora, the visit has reinforced the shared vision of both nations to work together in addressing emerging economic and geopolitical challenges in the Indo-Pacific region. Following the successful conclusion of his engagements in Australia, Prime Minister Modi departed for Auckland, New Zealand, for the next leg of his three-nation tour.
