Over 70,000 Class 12 Students Seek Review of CBSE Results Through Grievance Redressal Process

More than 70,000 applications have been received from Class 12 students under the Central Board of Secondary Education's (CBSE) post-result grievance redressal mechanism, reflecting widespread concerns over the evaluation process following the declaration of results on May 13.

According to official figures, the board received 7,314 applications for Verification of Marks and over 63,000 applications for re-evaluation. The online portal for verification of issues identified in scanned copies of answer books and for re-evaluation of answers was opened on Tuesday, allowing students to challenge or seek clarification regarding their scores.

The large number of applications comes amid growing dissatisfaction among a section of students who questioned the accuracy and transparency of the evaluation process carried out under the On-Screen Marking (OSM) system. Several students and parents raised concerns over discrepancies in marks awarded, prompting calls for a review of the examination assessment mechanism.

In response to these concerns, the Ministry of Education initiated a comprehensive review of the implementation and procurement aspects of the OSM system. The review is examining multiple dimensions, including vendor performance, adherence to contractual obligations, and the effectiveness of quality-control measures put in place during the evaluation process.

As part of efforts to strengthen accountability and restore confidence in the examination system, the government recently introduced significant administrative changes within the CBSE. CBSE Chairman Rahul Singh and Secretary Himanshu Gupta were transferred from their positions. Subsequently, Prashant Lokhande was appointed as the new Chairman of the board.

The government has also ordered an independent inquiry into the OSM project. On June 2, an investigation headed by S. Radha Chauhan, Chairperson of the Capacity Building Commission, was launched to examine procurement-related procedures and implementation practices associated with the digital evaluation system.

Education experts believe the inquiry will play a crucial role in identifying potential gaps in the assessment framework and recommending measures to enhance transparency and efficiency. The findings are expected to help strengthen trust among students, parents, and educational institutions regarding the fairness of board examinations.

The CBSE's grievance redressal process provides students with an opportunity to verify marks, review scanned answer sheets, and request re-evaluation if they believe errors have occurred during assessment. The unprecedented volume of applications this year highlights the importance of maintaining robust quality assurance mechanisms in large-scale examinations conducted across the country.

As the review and inquiry progress, students and parents are awaiting clarity on the concerns raised regarding the OSM system, while education authorities continue efforts to ensure credibility and confidence in the board examination process.
