Over 2,000 Route Kilometres of Kavach Commissioned to Boost Railway Safety: Ashwini Vaishnaw

Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Wednesday said that Indian Railways has commissioned over two thousand route kilometres of the Kavach system, marking a significant milestone in strengthening rail safety across the country. Kavach is an indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system designed to prevent accidents and enhance the overall safety of train operations.

Replying to supplementary questions during Question Hour in the Lok Sabha, Mr Vaishnaw informed the House that the Kavach system has so far been installed on 4,154 locomotives. He underlined that the rollout of the advanced safety technology is progressing at a rapid pace, reflecting the government’s strong focus on passenger safety and modernisation of railway infrastructure.

The Railways Minister also highlighted the extensive capacity-building efforts undertaken to support the implementation of Kavach. More than 40,000 technicians and operators have already been trained to work with the system, ensuring smooth operations and effective on-ground deployment. He said this large-scale training programme is crucial for maintaining high safety standards as the network continues to expand.

Kavach is designed to automatically apply brakes in case of potential collisions, overspeeding, or signal passing at danger, thereby reducing human error and improving operational reliability. Being a home-grown technology, it also aligns with the government’s vision of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ by reducing dependence on imported safety systems.

With the commissioning of Kavach across increasing sections of the railway network, Indian Railways is steadily moving towards a safer, more technologically advanced future, aimed at protecting millions of passengers who rely on trains every day.
