According to sources cited by Press Trust of India (PTI), thousands of employees across departments have been impacted. The scale of the cuts is notable, given that Oracle employs roughly 30,000 people in India, making the layoffs particularly consequential for the domestic tech ecosystem.

Globally, Oracle had approximately 1,62,000 full-time employees as of May 2025. The reported downsizing therefore represents a substantial workforce reduction as the company seeks to recalibrate its operations.

Reason Behind the Layoffs

Employees affected by the layoffs were informed via internal communication that organizational restructuring was underway. The company cited a need to “streamline operations,” resulting in certain roles becoming redundant.

While Oracle has not officially commented on the reports, insiders suggest the restructuring aligns with shifting business priorities, cost optimization, and evolving technological demands.

Severance Package and Conditions

The company has reportedly offered a severance package to impacted employees in India, which includes:

  • 15 days’ salary for each completed year of service
  • One month’s unpaid wages until the termination date
  • Leave encashment
  • Gratuity (based on eligibility)
  • One-month notice period pay
  • An additional two months’ salary as a top-up

However, the severance benefits are said to apply only to employees who voluntarily resign under mutually agreed terms, raising concerns among those affected about the fairness of the process.

Employee Reactions and Concerns

The layoffs have sparked unease among current and former employees. Merugu Sridhar, an ex-employee, claimed he was previously laid off after protesting against extended 16-hour work shifts in India. He also noted that employees of Indian origin working in the United States may have been disproportionately impacted, citing stricter local labor laws that protect domestic workers.

Such accounts have intensified scrutiny over workplace practices and the broader implications of mass layoffs in the tech industry.
