A terrorist was neutralized and an Army Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) sustained injuries during a fierce gunfight that erupted between security forces and terrorists in the forest area of Gudar in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Monday. The operation, based on specific intelligence, is still underway as security forces believe a second terrorist remains trapped in the area.
The encounter began after a joint team of the Jammu and Kashmir Police's Special Operations Group (SOG), the Indian Army, and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) launched a meticulous search operation in the dense Gudar forests.
According to a statement from the Indian Army's Chinar Corps, vigilant troops on the ground observed suspicious movement. "Upon being challenged, terrorists opened fire, prompting a fierce exchange of gunfire during which one terrorist has been eliminated and a junior commissioned officer suffered injuries," the Corps stated on social media platform X.
The injured JCO was promptly evacuated from the encounter site and is currently receiving medical treatment. His condition is reported to be stable.
Following the initial exchange of fire, the body of one terrorist was recovered from the nearby apple orchards. The identification and affiliation of the slain terrorist are currently being ascertained by the authorities.
The Kashmir Zone Police confirmed the operation, stating, "Based on specific intelligence, an encounter has started in the Guddar forest of Kulgam. SOG of J&K Police, Army, and CRPF on the job." As of the latest reports, the area remains cordoned off as the security forces continue their search to locate and neutralize the remaining terrorist.
In a separate incident highlighting the ongoing security challenges along the border, the Border Security Force (BSF) arrested a Pakistani national attempting to sneak into Indian territory in the RS Pura sector of Jammu on Sunday night.
The intruder has been identified as Siraj Khan, a resident of Sargodha in Pakistan's Punjab province. Officials reported that BSF troops manning the Octroi outpost detected the movement around 9:20 pm. After being challenged, the intruder was apprehended near the border fence. A few warning shots were fired during the operation.
A search led to the recovery of some Pakistani currency from his possession. The individual is currently in custody and being questioned by security agencies to determine the motive behind his attempt to cross the International Border illegally.
These back-to-back incidents underscore the persistent efforts of terror groups to disrupt peace in the region and the continued vigilance of the Indian security forces in thwarting both cross-border intrusions and militancy within the hinterland.
