Nitish Kumar Poised for Record Tenth Term as Bihar CM, NDA Meet Today

In a meticulously planned political sequence, Janata Dal (United) chief Nitish Kumar is set to be formally anointed as the leader of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) on Wednesday, paving the way for him to take oath as the Chief Minister of Bihar for a record tenth time.

The day's events will unfold in a series of strategic steps, underscoring the alliance's formal structure. According to sources, the process will begin at 11 am with Mr. Kumar being elected as the leader of the JD(U) legislature party. This will be followed by a broader meeting of all NDA legislators at 3:30 pm, where he will be formally chosen as the coalition's leader.

Subsequently, Mr. Kumar will proceed to Raj Bhavan to submit his resignation to Governor Arif Mohammad Khan, simultaneously presenting the letters of support from all NDA allies to stake claim for forming the new government. The current state legislative assembly will be officially dissolved on Wednesday, making way for the new house.

The grand swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for Thursday at Patna's historic Gandhi Maidan, a venue chosen for its symbolic significance and capacity to host a large gathering. The event is expected to be a major political spectacle, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and several Chief Ministers from NDA-ruled states likely to be in attendance. Elaborate security arrangements have been put in place across the state capital to ensure the event passes off smoothly.

Preparations for the ceremony were personally reviewed on Tuesday by the Chief Minister-designate, who was accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, senior ministers, and Chief Secretary Pratyaya Amrit.

Portfolio Tussle and Speaker's Post

Despite the dominant victory, the NDA camp is witnessing intense lobbying over the distribution of cabinet portfolios and the crucial post of the Assembly Speaker. Both the BJP and the JD(U) are reportedly staking claim to the Speaker's position, a negotiation that is being closely watched as a indicator of the balance of power within the alliance.

The NDA secured an overwhelming mandate in the recently concluded assembly elections, winning 202 of the 243 seats. The BJP emerged as the single largest party with 89 seats, while the JD(U) followed closely with 85.

Opposition Alleges Financial Influence

In a sharp reaction to the election results, political strategist-turned-politician Prashant Kishor of the Jan Suraaj Party alleged that the JD(U)'s performance was significantly bolstered by the state government's pre-poll financial schemes. He claimed that the administration distributed cash benefits worth "thousands of crores" to influence voters.

While accepting responsibility for his own party's poor performance, Kishor issued a bold challenge. He asserted that he would quit politics if the incoming NDA government fulfills its prominent poll promise of providing Rs 2 lakh to 1.5 crore women in the state under self-employment schemes.

As Nitish Kumar prepares to script history with his tenth term, the focus now shifts to the composition of his new cabinet, the resolution of alliance dynamics, and the formidable task of delivering on the coalition's ambitious promises.
