Nitish Kumar Likely to Step Down as Bihar CM After Rajya Sabha Win

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is expected to step down from his post in the coming days, following his recent election to the Rajya Sabha and the constitutional requirement to relinquish one of his positions. According to sources familiar with the development, the decision is nearly final and is likely to be formalized on March 30.

The development comes after Kumar secured a seat in the Rajya Sabha on March 16. Under constitutional provisions, an individual cannot simultaneously hold membership in two legislative bodies. As Kumar is currently a member of the Bihar Legislative Council (MLC), he is required to vacate one position within 14 days of being elected to Parliament.

With both the Bihar Assembly and the Legislative Council on recess until March 29, Kumar is expected to submit his resignation as an MLC when the Houses reconvene on March 30. This move would clear the way for him to assume his role in the Upper House of Parliament.

A Strategic Shift in Political Role

Nitish Kumar’s transition to the Rajya Sabha signals a significant shift in his political trajectory. Having served as Bihar’s longest-serving Chief Minister, his move to national politics could reshape the leadership dynamics within the state.

In a message posted on X after his election, Kumar expressed gratitude to the people of Bihar for their continued trust over the past two decades. He credited public support for enabling his government to drive development and enhance the state's dignity.

“For more than two decades, you have consistently placed your trust and support in me... It is this trust that has helped Bihar move towards a new dimension of development and dignity,” Kumar said, reiterating his commitment to public service.

Longstanding Political Aspirations

Kumar also revealed that becoming a member of both Houses of the state legislature as well as Parliament had long been a personal aspiration. His election to the Rajya Sabha marks the fulfillment of that goal, further solidifying his extensive political career.

The Rajya Sabha elections this year were held for 11 out of 37 vacant seats across Bihar, Odisha, and Haryana, while the remaining candidates were elected unopposed earlier.

Strengthening Grip Over JD(U)

In a parallel development, Nitish Kumar was recently elected unopposed as the president of the Janata Dal (United) on March 24. No other candidate filed a nomination for the top post, reaffirming his strong hold over the party.

He has been serving as JD(U) president since December 2023, after Lalan Singh stepped down ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. Kumar’s re-election as party chief further consolidates his influence within the organization at a time of political transition.

What Lies Ahead

If Kumar steps down as Chief Minister, it will mark the end of an era in Bihar politics. Attention will then shift to his successor and the future course of governance in the state.

While an official announcement is awaited, the political developments indicate that Bihar may soon witness a leadership change, with Nitish Kumar moving onto a larger role at the national level.
