New Delhi Braces for Extreme Heat and Very Unhealthy Air Quality

New Delhi is currently facing a severe heatwave, with temperatures soaring to dangerous levels. On Thursday, April 17, the city recorded a temperature of 39°C in the afternoon, but it felt even hotter, with a RealFeel of 42°C. The maximum temperature for the day is expected to reach 41°C. The weather is mostly sunny and dry, increasing the risk of dehydration and heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke for those spending long hours outdoors.

The nights will remain warm as well, with temperatures not dropping below 26°C. This hot and dry weather is expected to continue over the next 10 days, with daytime highs consistently ranging from 40°C to 45°C. The hottest days are likely to be next Thursday and Friday (April 24–25), when the temperature may hit a scorching 45°C.

In addition to the heat, the air quality in Delhi is a major concern. It has been marked as “Very Unhealthy,” which means people with breathing problems or other health issues should avoid going outside. Even healthy individuals may experience throat irritation, coughing, or difficulty breathing. Authorities are advising all residents to limit outdoor activities, especially in the afternoon, and to stay in shaded or air-conditioned places whenever possible.

With no rain in the forecast and humidity levels staying low, it’s important for everyone to stay hydrated, wear light clothing, and take regular breaks if working outside. The sun is expected to rise around 5:54 AM and set at 6:48 PM, with long sunny hours adding to the heat stress.

Delhiites are urged to take this weather seriously and follow safety tips to protect themselves from the severe heat and poor air quality in the coming days.
