NCB–CRPF Joint Operation Busts Major Transnational Drug Syndicate Near Aizawl

NCB–CRPF Joint Operation Busts Major Transnational Drug Syndicate Near Aizawl

In a significant achievement in India’s fight against narcotics, a joint operation conducted by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) led to the seizure of 5.9 kilograms of methamphetamine near Aizawl, Mizoram. The operation also resulted in the arrest of eight members of a transnational drug syndicate, dealing a major blow to organized drug trafficking networks operating across the Indo-Myanmar border.

Kingpin Jabrul Hoque Arrested

Among those arrested is Jabrul Hoque, a resident of Karimganj, Assam, and allegedly the kingpin of the entire trafficking network. Hoque is a habitual offender and has been implicated in multiple narcotics cases across the Northeast. Authorities revealed that he already has three drug-trafficking cases registered against him, including one at Dharmanagar Police Station in Tripura, where he was currently out on bail.

His arrest marks a major breakthrough for law-enforcement agencies, as he is believed to have played a central role in coordinating cross-border smuggling operations and expanding the network’s reach into neighbouring countries.

Smuggling Route Exposed

Preliminary investigations have confirmed that the seized methamphetamine had been smuggled across the Indo-Myanmar border near Champhai, a region known for its vulnerability to narcotics trafficking due to its porous boundary. The consignment was being transported to Sonamura in Tripura, from where it was intended to be pushed further into Bangladesh, indicating the international scale of the drug syndicate’s operations.

The seizure highlights the increasing use of India’s northeastern corridor as a key transit route for synthetic drugs originating from the infamous Golden Triangle region.

Strengthening NCB’s Presence in the Northeast

The NCB has been expanding its operational footprint in the Northeast to curb the rising inflow of synthetic and high-value narcotics. For improved coordination with state authorities and to enable real-time intelligence sharing, the agency has recently set up a new regional office in Guwahati.

In addition, several new units have been established to enhance field-level surveillance and swift action:

  • New Zonal Units at

    • Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh

    • Siliguri, West Bengal

    • Agartala, Tripura

  • Functional Field Offices at

    • Aizawl, Mizoram

    • Dimapur, Nagaland

These infrastructural expansions are expected to significantly boost the NCB’s ability to counter emerging narcotics challenges in the strategically sensitive Northeast.

A Major Step in Curbing Transnational Drug Trafficking

The successful joint operation showcases the growing synergy between central agencies and state forces in combating organized drug rackets. The arrest of hardened traffickers and the dismantling of a key syndicate are likely to disrupt the flow of methamphetamine across the region.

As authorities delve deeper into the network’s activities, more revelations about its scale, financing, and cross-border links are expected. Meanwhile, the seizure stands as a reminder of the evolving nature of drug trafficking and the need for persistent vigilance in border states.
