Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit the historic Somnath Temple in Gujarat on May 11 to commemorate 75 years since the restored temple was inaugurated by India’s first President, Rajendra Prasad in 1951.
The Prime Minister shared the information through an article published in a national daily on Friday, highlighting the spiritual and historical importance of Somnath in India’s cultural journey. In the article, Modi described it as a privilege to be associated with two major events linked to Somnath within a short span of time.
Earlier this year, the Prime Minister attended the Somnath Swabhiman Parv, an event organised to mark one thousand years since the first attack on the temple. Referring to the occasion, Modi said Somnath stands as a powerful symbol of India’s civilisational strength, unity and resilience through centuries of challenges and invasions.
He noted that the story of Somnath is not merely about a temple, but about the enduring spirit of faith and cultural continuity. According to the Prime Minister, the temple’s journey reflects a transformation “from destruction to creation,” showcasing how India’s traditions and spiritual heritage have survived repeated attacks and hardships over the centuries.
The Somnath Temple, located on the western coast of Gujarat, is regarded as one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites for Hindus and is among the twelve Jyotirlingas dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple has been rebuilt several times throughout history after suffering repeated destruction during foreign invasions.
Its restoration after Independence became a symbol of national pride and cultural revival. The reconstructed temple was inaugurated in 1951 by President Rajendra Prasad, an event considered historically significant in independent India’s cultural and spiritual narrative.
Prime Minister Modi, who has often spoken about preserving India’s heritage and civilisational identity, reiterated in his article that Somnath continues to inspire generations with its message of resilience and renewal. His upcoming visit is expected to draw devotees and dignitaries from across the country as the temple marks the landmark anniversary of its restoration.
