Modi Calls High Turnout ‘Beginning of the End’ for TMC Rule in Bengal

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday described the record voter turnout in the first phase of the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026 as the “beginning of the end” for the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), asserting that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is poised to form the next government in the state.

Addressing a rally in Dum Dum, the Prime Minister said the high participation of voters signals a decisive shift in public sentiment. “The support witnessed in favour of the BJP has sounded the bugle of its victory,” he said, adding that the people of West Bengal have begun “rebuilding the temple of democracy” after what he described as years of authoritarian governance under the TMC.

Modi alleged that TMC leaders have “lost their nerve” as they anticipate defeat, and accused the ruling party of fostering a “maha jungle raj” marked by corruption, violence, and misrule. He also claimed that the BJP, once in power, would take firm action against infiltration and revisit cases related to alleged atrocities against women, calling it a “Modi ki guarantee.”

A significant part of the Prime Minister’s address focused on women’s safety and empowerment. Thanking women voters for their participation, he accused the TMC of being “anti-women” and failing to ensure their security. “When the daughters of Bengal seek justice, they are told not to step out of their homes. The BJP will not allow anyone to trample upon their dreams,” he said.

Highlighting his party’s commitment, Modi pointed out that the BJP has fielded Ratna Debnath, mother of a victim in the RG Kar rape-murder case, as a candidate—an example, he said, of the party’s intent to give voice to those seeking justice.

The Prime Minister also outlined key policy promises, stating that the Ayushman Bharat Yojana would be implemented in West Bengal in the first cabinet meeting if the BJP comes to power. The scheme provides free medical treatment of up to ₹5 lakh to eligible beneficiaries. He added that the BJP’s focus on last-mile delivery has consistently earned public trust across the country.

The first phase of polling in the state recorded an impressive turnout of 92.88 percent, reflecting heightened political engagement. The second phase is scheduled for April 29, with results set to be declared on May 4.

Modi’s rally marked his first visit to the state after the opening phase of voting, as the BJP intensifies its campaign to unseat the TMC in what is shaping up to be a fiercely contested election.
