Modi at G7 Summit: Focus on Inclusive Growth, AI Governance and Key Talks with Trump

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is participating in a crucial working session on “Promoting Balanced, Inclusive and Sustainable Economic Growth for the Benefit of All” at the ongoing G7 Summit in Evian, France, reinforcing India’s growing role in shaping global economic and development discussions.

The high-level session has brought together leaders of G7 member nations, partner countries, and senior representatives from major international institutions, including the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The deliberations are focused on addressing global economic challenges, fostering equitable growth, and ensuring that development benefits reach all sections of society.

While the summit agenda is packed with important discussions, significant attention is centred on Prime Minister Modi’s scheduled bilateral meeting with United States President Donald Trump. The meeting, slated for later in the day, will be the first face-to-face interaction between the two leaders since their meeting in Washington D.C. in February 2025.

The Modi-Trump talks are expected to cover a broad spectrum of issues, including trade, technology, defence cooperation, investment, and strategic partnerships. The two leaders are also likely to exchange views on key regional and global developments, reflecting the growing importance of India-US ties in an increasingly complex geopolitical environment.

The meeting assumes particular significance as India continues to strengthen its position as a leading global power. Over the past decade, New Delhi has expanded its diplomatic outreach and emerged as an influential voice on issues ranging from economic development and climate change to digital governance and global security. As a result, many countries increasingly view India as a critical partner in addressing pressing international challenges.

Apart from his engagement with President Trump, Prime Minister Modi will participate in a working lunch dedicated to “Ensuring the Safe, Rapid and Effective Deployment of Artificial Intelligence.” The session will bring together leaders from G7 countries, partner nations, and chief executives of leading AI companies to discuss opportunities and challenges associated with emerging technologies. India is expected to advocate for responsible, inclusive, and human-centric AI governance while highlighting the transformative potential of digital innovation for developing economies.

The Prime Minister is also scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, further strengthening India’s engagement with key European partners.

On the sidelines of the summit, Mr Modi has already held an extensive series of bilateral meetings. These included discussions with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. He also met Kenyan President William Ruto, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, and South Korean President Lee Jae-Myung.

The series of engagements underscores India’s expanding diplomatic footprint and highlights Prime Minister Modi’s efforts to deepen partnerships across regions while advancing India’s interests on major global platforms. As the G7 Summit progresses, India’s participation is expected to contribute significantly to discussions on economic resilience, technological innovation, and international cooperation.
