Thursday morning witnessed chaos and gridlock at the Delhi-Noida border as farmers from Noida and Greater Noida rallied for a protest march towards the Parliament. The repercussions of the protest were felt as a sea of vehicles, including two-wheelers and four-wheelers, found themselves stranded in a relentless traffic jam at Sarita Vihar. Reports also indicated heavy congestion along the Delhi to Noida route, exacerbating the commuters' woes.
The escalation of tensions prompted authorities to take proactive measures. Section 144 was swiftly imposed, and all borders were sealed for a duration of 24 hours. "Heavy security deployment at all the borders. Arrangements have been made so that the people do not face any trouble. Security has been heightened. We are in talks with the farmers. All the vehicles are being checked," stated DIG, Addl. CP (L&O), Shivhari Meena.
The genesis of this traffic turmoil lies in the ongoing protests by farmers in Noida and Greater Noida since December 2023. Their demands revolve around increased compensation and developed plots in exchange for the land acquired by local development authorities in the past. Frustrated by what they perceive as unmet promises and grievances, the farmers' groups orchestrated a 'kisan mahapanchayat' and decided to stage a protest march to Parliament in the national capital.
To preempt any untoward incidents, the police had imposed Section 144 earlier, setting restrictions effective from February 7 to 8. The measures encompassed a ban on unlawful assembly of more than five people and unauthorized processions, spanning religious and political contexts alike.
The clash of interests between the protesting farmers and the authorities underscores the complexity of socioeconomic issues prevalent in the region.
