LPG Crisis Spurs Innovation: North India’s First Gas ATM Launched in Gurugram

Amid an ongoing LPG shortage across India triggered by the escalating geopolitical tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, a groundbreaking solution has emerged in Gurugram. In a first for North India, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) has introduced an LPG “Gas ATM,” offering residents a faster and more convenient way to access cooking gas.

The smart vending machine has been installed at Central Park Flower Valley as part of a pilot project. Designed to eliminate long waiting hours for LPG refills, the system allows users to obtain a filled cylinder in just 2 to 3 minutes.

Fully Automated and Contactless System

The LPG ATM operates through a seamless, contactless process. Customers simply log in using their registered mobile number, verify their identity via OTP, and scan a QR code to make payment through any UPI platform. Once the transaction is complete, the machine dispenses a filled cylinder while securely storing the empty one inside.

Lightweight, Safer Cylinders

One of the key innovations lies in the type of cylinders being used. Unlike traditional iron cylinders, the ATM provides modern composite cylinders made of fibre. These cylinders are significantly lighter—around 15 kg compared to the conventional 31 kg—making them easier to handle. They are also rust-free, hygienic, and feature a transparent body, allowing users to easily monitor gas levels.

Round-the-Clock Convenience

Available 24x7, the LPG ATM ensures that consumers are no longer dependent on delivery schedules or agency timings. Whether early morning or late at night, users can refill their gas cylinders within minutes. The machine can store up to 10 cylinders at a time and is equipped with an automated alert system that notifies the gas agency when stock runs low.

A Glimpse Into the Future of Gas Distribution

This initiative marks a significant step toward modernising India’s LPG distribution network. By integrating automation and digital payment systems, BPCL aims to provide faster, safer, and more efficient service to customers. If the pilot proves successful, similar LPG ATMs could soon be rolled out across other cities in the country, potentially transforming how millions access cooking gas.
