Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kalyan Banerjee was suspended from the Lok Sabha on Wednesday for the remainder of the ongoing Monsoon Session over allegations of using unparliamentary language against a woman member of the House. The decision was announced by the presiding officer, Krishna Prasad Tenneti, who stated that Banerjee's remarks had hurt the dignity and decorum of the House.
The suspension followed an incident that reportedly took place after the Lok Sabha was adjourned amid opposition protests. Banerjee was involved in a heated exchange with members of the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI), including Mitali Bagh, Shatabdi Roy and Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, all of whom were formerly associated with the TMC. The exact reason behind the confrontation remains unclear, but the verbal altercation drew the attention of several MPs present in the House.
As the exchange escalated, some opposition members intervened and attempted to calm the situation. Shortly afterwards, Banerjee left the Lok Sabha chamber when questioned by fellow opposition MPs about the incident.
Following the altercation, NCPI MPs, including Mitali Bagh and Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, along with several other members, met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to raise the issue. According to sources, the Speaker asked the NCPI members to submit a formal written complaint regarding the alleged misconduct.
The suspension comes against the backdrop of a major political realignment in West Bengal. After the Trinamool Congress suffered defeat in the state assembly elections, as many as 20 TMC MPs rebelled against the party leadership and joined the NCPI. Since then, the former TMC members have been sitting separately in the Lok Sabha and have publicly declared their support for the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The latest episode highlights the growing political tensions between the TMC and its former members, whose departure has significantly altered parliamentary dynamics. The suspension of Kalyan Banerjee also underscores the Lok Sabha's emphasis on maintaining parliamentary decorum and respectful conduct among members during proceedings.
