Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is set to travel to New Delhi next month to attend the upcoming BRICS Summit, according to sources cited by news agency ANI. The visit is expected to assume considerable diplomatic significance as India prepares to host the 18th BRICS Summit in September under its 2026 chairship.
India assumed the BRICS chairmanship from Brazil at the beginning of 2026 and has chosen the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability” for its presidency. The participation of the Iranian President would provide an important platform for discussions on global governance, economic cooperation, regional stability and the rapidly changing geopolitical situation in West Asia.
Pezeshkian’s proposed visit comes at a time when Iran’s relations with major global powers and the security situation in West Asia remain under close international scrutiny. India, which maintains longstanding ties with Iran, has consistently advocated dialogue and diplomacy as the preferred means of addressing regional conflicts.
Pezeshkian had earlier met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in October 2024 on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia. The two leaders discussed bilateral relations as well as regional and international developments. His upcoming visit to New Delhi is therefore likely to provide another opportunity for India and Iran to strengthen their engagement.
Iran became a full member of BRICS in 2024 along with Egypt, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates. Indonesia subsequently joined the grouping in 2025, taking the number of full members to 11. Iran’s inclusion has expanded BRICS’ geographical and strategic reach and increased the importance of the grouping in discussions on global economic and political issues.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi’s visit to India in June also underlined the growing importance Tehran attaches to New Delhi. Araghchi participated in the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and highlighted India’s expanding role in international diplomacy. He said India could play a greater role in helping de-escalate tensions in West Asia.
Araghchi also made clear that Tehran does not see a future in armed conflict and believes that there is no military solution to the prevailing crisis. According to him, a negotiated settlement remains the only viable path forward. He further indicated that Iran would welcome any constructive role India could play in promoting peace and de-escalation.
During his talks with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Araghchi also discussed developments concerning the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically vital maritime corridor. He stressed Iran’s role in ensuring security in the region and described Tehran as a reliable partner for friendly nations seeking the safety of commercial activity.
Pezeshkian’s presence at the BRICS Summit could consequently give India an opportunity to engage Iran at the highest political level on regional security, connectivity, trade and economic cooperation. It may also reinforce New Delhi’s diplomatic profile as a country capable of maintaining dialogue with competing geopolitical blocs.
The summit is expected to bring together leaders of the expanded BRICS grouping at a crucial moment for the global order. For India, the participation of the Iranian President would add another important dimension to its effort to promote resilience, cooperation and sustainable development while simultaneously encouraging dialogue on pressing international conflicts.
