The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 saw its first Super Over on Wednesday (April 16) in an exciting match between Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. Delhi Capitals had scored 189 runs, and Rajasthan Royals matched that, making the game end in a tie. This led to a Super Over — a one-over match to decide the winner.
The hero of the match was Mitchell Starc. He stayed calm and focused, bowling really well at the end. Delhi captain Axar Patel praised Starc, saying,
“I believed if Starc bowled well, we could win. He bowled the 20th over and then again in the Super Over. He bowled 12 perfect yorkers in 12 balls — that’s why he’s a legend.”
In the last over of the main match, Rajasthan needed just 9 runs, but Starc’s amazing yorkers kept them from winning. Then, in the Super Over, he gave away only 11 runs.
Delhi Capitals then came to bat, and Tristan Stubbs along with KL Rahul played superbly, helping the team win the Super Over. With this win, Delhi went to the top of the IPL 2025 points table after playing six matches.
Player of the Match: Mitchell Starc
Starc won the Player of the Match award for his brilliant bowling. This win also helped Delhi bounce back after losing their last match to Mumbai Indians, which they lost due to a few runouts.
Delhi Capitals will now play their next game on Saturday (April 19) against Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. It’s an important match since both teams are fighting for the top two spots and a place in the Playoffs.
