INS Taragiri Commissioned: Boost to India’s Maritime Power and Self-Reliance

India marked a significant milestone in its naval modernization journey with the commissioning of the stealth frigate INS Taragiri at the Naval Dockyard in Visakhapatnam. The ceremony was presided over by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, underscoring the strategic importance of the induction.

Built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, INS Taragiri is the fourth warship under the advanced Project 17A class of stealth frigates. Its commissioning represents a major boost to India’s indigenous defence manufacturing capabilities and reinforces the Navy’s operational strength.

Addressing the gathering, Rajnath Singh emphasized that maritime power is central to India’s vision of becoming a developed nation by 2047. Highlighting the country’s strategic geography, he noted that India has a coastline exceeding 11,000 kilometres and is surrounded by seas on three sides. He pointed out that nearly 95 percent of India’s trade is conducted via maritime routes, while energy security is also heavily dependent on the seas—making a strong naval force indispensable.

The Defence Minister praised the Indian Navy’s role in safeguarding commercial shipping and oil tankers, particularly during periods of regional tension. He also highlighted the Navy’s consistent presence in critical maritime regions such as the Indian Ocean, the Persian Gulf, and the Malacca Strait. Beyond security, he noted the Navy’s vital contributions to humanitarian assistance and evacuation operations during crises.

Weighing approximately 6,670 tonnes, INS Taragiri is equipped with cutting-edge stealth features and advanced weapon systems, significantly enhancing its combat capabilities. With more than 75 percent indigenous content, the warship reflects India’s growing success in achieving self-reliance in defence production under its “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiative.

The event was attended by top military leadership, including Chief of Defence Staff Anil Chauhan, Chief of the Naval Staff Dinesh K. Tripathi, and Vice Admiral Sanjay Bhalla, along with other senior naval officials and personnel.

The commissioning of INS Taragiri marks another step forward in strengthening India’s maritime security framework and enhancing its strategic presence across vital sea lanes.
