India–Italy Defence Talks Deepen Strategic Cooperation Amid Global Concerns

Defence ties between India and Italy received a fresh boost as Rajnath Singh held wide-ranging discussions with his Italian counterpart Guido Crosetto in New Delhi on Thursday. The high-level meeting focused on strengthening bilateral defence cooperation while also addressing pressing regional and global developments, including the evolving situation in West Asia.

In a post shared on social media, Singh highlighted that the dialogue covered key areas of mutual interest, with particular emphasis on enhancing defence industrial collaboration. Both sides explored opportunities to expand cooperation under India’s flagship Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, aimed at boosting indigenous manufacturing and reducing reliance on imports. The discussions also aligned with Italy’s ongoing defence cooperation efforts, signalling a shared commitment to building resilient and self-sustaining defence ecosystems.

A significant outcome of the meeting was the exchange of the Bilateral Military Cooperation Plan for 2026–27. This framework outlines a roadmap for future military engagements between the armed forces of the two nations, including joint exercises, training programmes, and strategic exchanges. The plan is expected to enhance interoperability and deepen trust between the two sides.

The dialogue comes at a time when geopolitical uncertainties, particularly in West Asia, continue to impact global security dynamics. Both ministers acknowledged the importance of close coordination and dialogue in addressing emerging challenges and maintaining stability in the region.

India and Italy have steadily expanded their defence and strategic partnership in recent years, with increasing cooperation in areas such as technology transfer, maritime security, and defence manufacturing. Thursday’s meeting underscores the growing convergence of interests between the two countries and their intent to further elevate bilateral ties in an increasingly complex global landscape.
