India Welcomes US-Iran Ceasefire, Urges Lasting Peace and Safe Energy Routes

India has welcomed the recent ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran, calling it a constructive step towards reducing tensions in the volatile Middle East region. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) expressed optimism that the development would pave the way for sustained peace, stability, and a return to normalcy in global trade and energy flows.

In an official statement, the MEA underscored the importance of diplomacy in resolving conflicts, reiterating India’s long-standing position that dialogue and de-escalation remain the most effective tools to prevent further escalation. “We welcome the ceasefire reached and hope that it will lead to a lasting peace in West Asia,” the ministry said, highlighting the urgent need to bring an end to the ongoing hostilities that have caused widespread disruption.

The ministry also drew attention to the critical role of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most vital energy corridors. With a significant portion of global oil shipments passing through this narrow waterway, any disruption has far-reaching consequences for international markets. India emphasized the need to ensure uninterrupted maritime traffic and expressed hope that the ceasefire would restore stability to shipping routes, safeguarding global commerce.

“The conflict has already caused immense suffering to people and disrupted global energy supply and trade networks,” the MEA noted. It further stressed that unimpeded freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz is essential for maintaining the steady flow of energy resources and economic stability worldwide.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump announced a temporary pause in planned military action against Iran, providing a crucial window for diplomatic engagement. Sharing the update on his Truth Social platform, Trump said the United States would delay potential strikes for two weeks, easing immediate fears of escalation.

Describing the move as a “double-sided ceasefire,” Trump indicated that both Washington and Tehran are expected to refrain from hostile actions during this period. The pause is widely seen as an opportunity for both sides to explore diplomatic solutions and prevent further deterioration of the situation.

According to Trump, the decision followed Iran’s agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a move that could help stabilize global oil supplies. He also claimed that the United States had achieved its primary military objectives and had received a 10-point proposal from Tehran addressing key concerns that had previously driven tensions.

While the ceasefire marks a significant shift towards dialogue, uncertainties remain over what will follow once the two-week pause ends. Nonetheless, India’s response reflects cautious optimism, emphasizing that sustained diplomatic efforts will be key to ensuring long-term peace and stability in the region.
