India Summons US Diplomat Over Attack on Commercial Vessel Off Oman Coast, Condemns Assault on Shipping

India has strongly condemned the attack on the commercial vessel Settebello off the coast of Oman and summoned the United States Chargé d’Affaires, Jason Meeks, to convey its concerns over the incident. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced the move on Wednesday while expressing deep concern over the safety of Indian nationals aboard the ship.

According to the MEA, the vessel had a crew of 24 Indian nationals. Rescue operations have successfully brought 21 Indians to safety, while three crew members remain missing. Efforts are underway to locate and rescue the missing personnel.

In an official statement, India described the continuing attacks on commercial shipping in the region as “deeply worrisome” and linked them to the ongoing conflict and instability in West Asia. The government emphasized that such incidents pose a serious threat to maritime security, global trade, and the safety of civilian seafarers.

New Delhi reiterated its call for the immediate de-escalation of tensions in the region and urged all parties involved to pursue dialogue and diplomacy. India stressed the need for the successful conclusion of ongoing negotiations aimed at finding a peaceful resolution to the conflict and restoring stability.

The Ministry also underscored that commercial vessels and civilian infrastructure must not be targeted under any circumstances. It called for an end to attacks on merchant shipping and highlighted the importance of safeguarding international maritime routes that are critical for global commerce and energy supplies.

India further urged the restoration of free, secure, and unimpeded navigation through international waterways in accordance with international law. The government emphasized that ensuring the safety of shipping lanes is essential for maintaining economic stability and preventing further escalation in the region.

The attack on Settebello comes amid heightened tensions in West Asia, where repeated incidents involving commercial vessels have raised concerns among the international community. India, which has significant economic and strategic interests in the region and a large number of nationals working in maritime sectors, has consistently advocated for peace, stability, and the protection of civilian lives.

As rescue and search operations continue for the missing Indian crew members, New Delhi remains in close contact with relevant authorities and is monitoring the situation closely. The government has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety and welfare of Indian citizens affected by the incident.
