In a strongly worded response, India has condemned Pakistan’s alleged airstrikes on a drug rehabilitation facility in the Afghan capital, Kabul, describing the attack as “barbaric” and “cowardly.” The strike on the Omid Addiction Treatment Hospital reportedly resulted in the deaths of nearly 400 people and left around 250 others injured, marking one of the deadliest civilian attacks in recent times.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs issued a sharp statement denouncing the incident, asserting that the targeting of a medical facility could not be justified under any circumstances. “This is a cowardly and unconscionable act of violence that has claimed the lives of a large number of civilians in a facility which can by no means be justified as a military target,” the statement said.
New Delhi accused Islamabad of attempting to misrepresent the attack as a legitimate military operation. “Pakistan is now trying to dress up a massacre as a military operation,” the ministry noted, calling the strike a “heinous act of aggression” and a blatant violation of Afghanistan’s sovereignty.
The Indian government further warned that such actions pose a serious threat to regional peace and stability. It described the strike as part of Pakistan’s “persistent pattern of reckless behaviour,” accusing it of repeatedly trying to deflect from internal challenges by engaging in cross-border aggression.
Highlighting the timing of the attack during the holy month of Ramzan, India said the act was particularly reprehensible. “That this attack was carried out during a time of peace, reflection, and mercy among Muslim communities across the world makes it all the more condemnable. There is no faith, no law, and no morality that can justify the deliberate targeting of a hospital and its patients,” the statement emphasized.
India also called upon the international community to take urgent note of the incident and ensure accountability for what it termed a “criminal act.” It urged global powers to act decisively to prevent further targeting of civilians in Afghanistan.
Expressing solidarity with the Afghan people, New Delhi extended its deepest condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to those injured. Reaffirming its longstanding position, India reiterated its unwavering support for Afghanistan’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity during this tragic moment.
