India Sets World Record with 642 Million Voters in Lok Sabha Polls, Announces Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar

In an unprecedented display of democratic participation, India has set a world record with 642 million voters participating in the recent Lok Sabha elections. Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar announced this remarkable achievement during a media briefing in New Delhi today. He emphasized that this figure surpasses the combined voter turnout of all G7 countries – the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and Canada – by 1.5 times.

The 2024 Lok Sabha elections witnessed an extraordinary level of engagement from the Indian electorate, with women voters playing a significant role. Kumar highlighted that 312 million women cast their votes, marking the highest number of women voters in any election worldwide. This milestone underscores the growing political empowerment and participation of women in India’s democratic process.

In addition to the record-breaking voter turnout, the Chief Election Commissioner pointed out the notable decrease in the number of repolling incidents. Only 39 repolling events were necessary this election cycle, a significant reduction from the 540 repolling incidents recorded during the 2019 General Election. This improvement reflects the Election Commission’s enhanced measures to ensure the integrity and efficiency of the voting process.

Commissioner Kumar commended the efforts of all those involved in the electoral process, from the polling officials to the security forces, for their dedication and commitment to upholding the democratic values of the nation. He attributed the smooth conduct of the elections to the robust planning, implementation of advanced technologies, and the active participation of citizens.

The high voter turnout and reduced instances of repolling signify a strengthening of India’s democratic fabric. The Election Commission’s focus on inclusivity and transparency has evidently resonated with the electorate, leading to a historic level of voter engagement. This achievement not only sets a benchmark for future elections in India but also serves as an inspiring example for democracies worldwide.

As India celebrates this monumental achievement, the Election Commission remains committed to further enhancing the electoral process. Commissioner Kumar reiterated the importance of continuous improvement and innovation to ensure that every citizen’s vote counts and that the democratic process remains robust and resilient.

In conclusion, the 2024 Lok Sabha elections have marked a significant chapter in India’s democratic journey, showcasing the power of collective participation and the enduring spirit of the Indian electorate.
