India Issues Travel Advisory as Thailand-Cambodia Border Tensions Escalate

Tensions between Thailand and Cambodia escalated on Thursday over a long-standing border dispute, prompting the Indian Embassy in Thailand to issue a travel advisory for Indian nationals. The advisory urges travelers to avoid visiting several areas along the volatile border region, citing recent security incidents and precautionary closures by Thai authorities.

In a post shared on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, the Indian Embassy in Thailand said, “In view of the situation near the Thailand-Cambodia border, all Indian travelers to Thailand are advised to check updates from Thai official sources, including TAT Newsroom.” The advisory also linked a post from the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Newsroom, detailing affected regions and precautions.

According to TAT, seven provinces along the border have been identified as not recommended for travel. These include:

  • Ubon Ratchathani

  • Surin

  • Sisaket

  • Buriram

  • Sa Kaeo

  • Chanthaburi

  • Trat

Within these provinces, specific sites such as Phanom Swai Forest Park, Chong Sai Taku, Ta Phraya National Park, and Chong Sa-ngam have been marked as restricted zones due to heightened security risks.

The border dispute, rooted in decades-old territorial disagreements, has seen periodic flare-ups over the years. However, the current spike in tension appears to have prompted immediate action from Thai security agencies. In its own statement, the Tourism Authority of Thailand said that the Royal Thai Army has temporarily closed several border checkpoints and nearby tourist areas to ensure public safety and national security.

“Security agencies are actively monitoring the situation and managing operations to ensure the safety of all,” TAT said, while urging international travelers to stay informed through official government sources.

The embassy’s advisory comes during Thailand’s peak tourist season, which sees thousands of Indian tourists visiting the country. With the current security climate in the region, Indian nationals planning to travel to border provinces are advised to exercise extreme caution and reconsider their itineraries.

Travelers are encouraged to stay updated through the official websites of the Indian Embassy in Thailand, the Tourism Authority of Thailand, and local authorities.
