India on Tuesday expressed deep concern over the rapidly evolving situation in West Asia, reiterating its call for safe and uninterrupted navigation through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz while strongly condemning the recent attack that claimed the life of an Indian national and left several others injured.
Addressing a media briefing in the national capital, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India is closely monitoring developments in the region, stressing that the security of the Strait of Hormuz is critical for global trade, energy supplies, and economic stability. He underlined that ensuring safe and unimpeded maritime movement through the waterway remains a priority, given its significance for the world's energy security.
The MEA spokesperson confirmed that India had summoned the Deputy Chief of Mission of Iran following the incident and conveyed its deepest concerns over the attack. During the diplomatic meeting, New Delhi strongly condemned the incident, pointing out that it had resulted in the loss of a precious Indian life while several Indian nationals sustained injuries. According to the government, a couple of the injured Indians remain in serious condition.
Jaiswal said India lodged its strongest protest with the Iranian side, emphasizing that such attacks must cease immediately. He noted that the government expects those responsible to ensure the safety of civilian shipping and the lives of seafarers navigating one of the world's busiest maritime corridors.
Reiterating India's long-standing position on regional conflicts, the MEA spokesperson called for immediate de-escalation of tensions in West Asia. He urged all sides to exercise restraint and resolve differences through dialogue and diplomacy rather than military confrontation. According to India, negotiations remain the only sustainable path to restoring peace and stability in the region.
The Strait of Hormuz serves as one of the world's most critical shipping lanes, carrying a significant share of global crude oil and liquefied natural gas exports.
