India and China Deepen Engagement Through SCO Consultations in New Delhi

India and China recently held bilateral consultations under the framework of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in New Delhi, reflecting a cautious yet constructive effort to sustain dialogue amid a complex regional and global landscape.

The Indian delegation was led by SCO National Coordinator Ambassador Alok A Dimri, while the Chinese side was headed by National Coordinator Ambassador Yan Wenbin. The meeting brought together senior officials from both countries to review ongoing cooperation and discuss the future direction of the SCO.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the consultations focused on the implementation of decisions taken by SCO leaders at previous summits. Both sides exchanged views on strengthening the organisation’s role in addressing shared challenges and enhancing multilateral cooperation across member states.

A key outcome of the meeting was the mutual agreement to continue and consolidate engagement within the SCO framework. This includes expanding cooperation in critical areas such as regional security, economic and trade partnerships, connectivity initiatives, and cultural and people-to-people exchanges.

In a significant gesture, both delegations jointly called on Secretary (West) Sibi George to further review the scope of collaboration. Discussions during this interaction emphasized the importance of maintaining institutional dialogue mechanisms within the SCO to ensure stability and progress in the region.

The consultations underscore the relevance of the SCO as a platform for dialogue between India and China, particularly at a time when bilateral relations face challenges. By engaging through multilateral forums, both nations appear to be signaling their willingness to keep communication channels open and explore avenues of cooperation in shared regional interests.

As the SCO continues to evolve, such bilateral engagements are likely to play a crucial role in shaping the organisation’s agenda and reinforcing its significance as a platform for regional cooperation and strategic dialogue.
