IMD Issues Orange Alert for Heavy Rain for Northeast; Thunderstorms, Squalls Likely Across Several States

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall across India’s northeastern region today, warning residents to remain cautious as intense weather activity is expected to impact daily life.

According to the Met Department, several northern and eastern states—including Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Chandigarh, Haryana, Delhi, Uttarakhand, Bihar, and Jharkhand—are likely to experience thundersquall conditions today. These may include sudden gusty winds, lightning, and brief but intense rainfall, potentially disrupting transport and power supply.

The IMD further predicted that thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong winds will affect central and southern parts of the country over the next two days. Regions such as Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Interior Karnataka, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Kerala, Mahe, Madhya Pradesh, and Vidarbha are expected to witness unstable weather patterns.

Similar conditions are forecast over coastal and southern belts, including Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Coastal Karnataka, Rayalaseema, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal during the same period.

In addition to rainfall and thunderstorms, the weather agency has also warned of hot and humid conditions persisting in parts of the eastern and southern coastline. Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal are expected to experience discomfort due to high temperatures combined with humidity over the next two days.

Authorities have advised people in affected areas to stay alert, avoid open spaces during lightning, and follow local advisories. With a mix of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and heat conditions forecast across multiple regions, the IMD’s latest update underscores a period of dynamic and potentially disruptive weather across the country.
