IMD Issues Heatwave Alert Across North India, Heavy Rainfall Likely in Northeast

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for heatwave conditions across several parts of the country, warning residents to brace for rising temperatures and uncomfortable weather conditions.

According to the IMD, regions including Delhi, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Chandigarh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Vidarbha are expected to experience heatwave conditions today. The alert signals potentially high temperatures that could impact daily life, particularly for vulnerable populations such as the elderly and outdoor workers.

In contrast to the scorching conditions in the northern and central regions, the northeastern states are set to receive significant rainfall. The weather agency has forecast heavy rain over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim, raising the possibility of localized flooding and travel disruptions in these areas.

Meanwhile, North Interior Karnataka is likely to witness thunderstorms and hailstorms continuing through tomorrow. The IMD has also predicted thunderstorms accompanied by lightning in several other parts of the country, including Bihar, Gangetic West Bengal, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Jharkhand, Kerala, Mahe, Marathwada, Uttarakhand, and Odisha.

Adding to the varied weather patterns, hot and humid conditions are expected to prevail in parts of Bihar, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat, Gangetic West Bengal, Kerala, Mahe, Konkan, Goa, and Manipur. These conditions could lead to discomfort and increased health risks, particularly due to high moisture levels in the air.

The IMD further noted that warm night conditions are likely to persist over Delhi, Haryana, Chandigarh, Punjab, and parts of Uttar Pradesh over the next two days. Such conditions can exacerbate heat stress, as temperatures remain elevated even after sunset, offering little relief from daytime heat.

Authorities have advised citizens to take necessary precautions, including staying hydrated, avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun, and keeping track of local weather updates as conditions evolve across regions.
