A horrific crime has come to light in northwest Delhi, where a 16-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped and murdered before her body was abandoned in an open field. Police have apprehended four people, including three juveniles, in connection with the case. Investigators are now piecing together the sequence of events through CCTV footage, forensic evidence and questioning of the suspects.
A shocking case of alleged sexual assault and murder has surfaced in Delhi after the decomposed body of a 16-year-old girl was discovered in an open field in the Swaroop Nagar area, police said. Four persons, including three juveniles, have been apprehended in connection with the crime.
According to investigators, the girl was acquainted with the accused and had been travelling with them in a tempo. Police suspect that the group consumed alcohol inside the vehicle before the teenager was allegedly sexually assaulted. She was subsequently stabbed and her body was dumped in an isolated area.
The victim's body was recovered on September 13 near Jaipal Rana's field along Kushak Road. By the time it was found, it had decomposed severely, making it difficult for investigators to immediately establish the victim's gender. Police also said stray dogs had damaged parts of the body and one hand was found separated from it.
The case initially presented investigators with a major challenge because no apparent eyewitness had come forward and the identity of the perpetrators was not known. The victim had also not been reported missing by her family. Police said her relatives told investigators that she sometimes left home and returned after several days.
A case was subsequently registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.
With little direct evidence available at the beginning of the investigation, police turned to technical surveillance. Teams examined more than 50 CCTV cameras installed around the location where the body was recovered and along adjoining routes.
During the examination, investigators noticed a tempo moving through the area around the suspected time of the crime. The vehicle's registration number could not initially be read because of poor visibility and darkness. Police therefore followed its movements through different CCTV points to establish its route.
The investigation intensified during the night of September 15 and continued into September 16. Police eventually traced the suspected vehicle and located its driver. Questioning of the driver reportedly provided investigators with leads that resulted in the apprehension of four people.
The accused include an adult identified by police as Shivam alias Sudama alias Chuchu, a resident of Khadda Colony, along with three juveniles aged 16 and 17.
Police said two knives allegedly connected with the crime, clothes purportedly worn by the accused and the tempo were recovered during the investigation.
Authorities are now working to establish the precise sequence of events and determine the individual role allegedly played by each person apprehended. Investigators are also examining forensic and technical evidence to corroborate the allegations.
The involvement of three juveniles means that the case also brings the juvenile justice framework into consideration alongside the provisions of the POCSO Act. Their alleged roles will have to be established through the investigation and evidence collected by the authorities.
Police have said the investigation remains underway. The forensic examination, CCTV trail and other technical evidence are expected to play an important role in determining what happened to the teenager and establishing the circumstances surrounding her death.
The case has once again highlighted the vulnerability of children and adolescents to sexual violence and the importance of timely reporting when a minor goes missing. At the same time, investigators will need to establish the allegations through legally admissible evidence as the case proceeds.
