In a stern response to a recent incident of violence in Thane, Maharashtra, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has unequivocally denounced the assault on a local shopkeeper by members of Raj Thackeray’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). Describing the incident as a blatant case of "hooliganism in the name of language," Fadnavis has pledged stringent legal action against the perpetrators.
The Chief Minister's strong condemnation came following a disturbing video that surfaced on July 1, depicting MNS workers confronting and physically assaulting a sweet shop owner allegedly for not speaking in Marathi. In the video, three individuals are seen entering the shop and questioning the shopkeeper about his language choice.
The shopkeeper, visibly surprised, calmly responded, "I didn’t know Marathi was compulsory. Someone will have to teach me." However, this response did not deter the attackers, who proceeded to slap him multiple times, verbally abuse him, and threaten to shut down his business.
Reacting to the incident, Chief Minister Fadnavis emphasized, "It is not wrong to take pride in the Marathi language in Maharashtra. However, resorting to violence over language differences is unacceptable." He underscored the need to respect all languages spoken in India and expressed dismay over the attackers' hypocritical stance on language issues.
"We are proud of our Marathi language, but this does not justify injustice towards any other language spoken in Maharashtra or elsewhere," Fadnavis asserted. He confirmed that the police had swiftly registered an FIR and initiated legal proceedings against the accused, warning of severe consequences if such acts were repeated.
